Jeff Bridges and The Abiders
Since the Golden Age of Hollywood there have always been actors who wanted to be singers. When they get their chance, it doesn’t always work out for the best, as anyone who saw the film version of Mamma Mia can attest.
Jeff Bridges is the real deal. In 2000 he released his first CD of country/folk music, “Be Here Soon,” and wrote six of its nine songs. But most people heard him sing for the first time in the 2009 film Crazy Heart. Bridges’ portrayal of an alcoholic country singer earned him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film’s success inspired another CD, produced by the great T Bone Burnett.
Since then, Bridges has occasionally taken his act on the road, sometimes backed by the Crazy Heart Band and sometimes, as for his upcoming Las Vegas appearance, with a group called the Abiders. Fans of Bridges’ cult hit The Big Lebowski will surely get the reference.
The Rocks Lounge at the Red Rock Resort is a bit larger and more upscale than the classic Vegas lounge, but is still a great place to see an intimate concert like this one. And if Jeff Bridges keeps changing band names based on his lengthy film career, we can all look forward to future appearances in which he’ll be backed by the Baker Boys, the White Squalls and the Starmen. He appears for two shows: June 20 at 8 PM and June 21 at 7 PM.
