In the vast sea of humanity called the Fremont Street Experience, one is likely to see many characters, some costumed and some not, some appealing and original and some not. There are musicians, showgirls, dancers, contortionists and others who will perform or take photos with you for tips right alongside the homeless, holding their cardboard signs. Visitors represent a montage from every walk of life and every age group.

It is truly a unique experience, with the overhead light show every hour and free concerts. But the ‘buskers’ or people who entertain for tips are an attraction for many visitors. Some of these street performers are regulars, others are just experimenting with costumes or ideas. There are varying levels of competence amongst these folks; some are seasoned veterans and others are just starting out, practicing their craft. Many of the regulars are acquainted with one another so stories, rumors and gossip make their way up and down the three-block-long sideshow.

All performers take risks but not too long ago, apparently a certain young magician needed a little more practice with one particular trick. It was a traditional ‘switch’ routine, using red solo cups. Underneath one of them was a block of wood with a long nail sticking out the top. As he switched the cups around, audience members lost track of which cup the nail was under. His big finale was to violently stomp on the one cup where observers thought the embedded nail was, thus giving a dramatic element of risk and danger, then surprise when the cup was smashed flat under his foot and voila – no nail! On this particular night, as he moved the cups around swiftly, deftly, he confused apparently, even himself. As he forcefully stomped the remaining cup, the nail went right through his foot and he was carted off in an ambulance!

Viewers got more of a show than they bargained for and he, no doubt, went back to his ‘day job.’
