The Fremont Street Experience
A favorite attraction in Las Vegas with visitors and locals alike, Fremont Street is the avant-garde home to casinos, small shops, kiosks and trendy restaurants. Fremont is always bustling and you never know who or what you may see. Showgirls hang out in front of the casinos and it is common to see Elvis impersonators, street performers and people in bizarre costumes Fremont Street, as its name suggests, offers free concerts and Viva Vision shows from 6 pm to midnight on the hour. Viva Vision is Fremont’s light and music show displayed on an overhead canopy five football fields in length, 90 feet above the ground and with 12 million LED modules and a 500,000-watt sound system.
Fremont Street also holds a street festival on the first Friday of every month, which includes displays of art, jewelry, photography and live music. First Friday is held from 6 – 9 p.m., rain or shine, and it is an enjoyable way to spend an evening without spending money, unless you spot something you cannot live without. If you choose to drive yourself, parking is convenient. There is free parking at the Fremont Hotel & Casino at 200 Fremont St. and the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino at 1 Fremont St. You can park at Binion’s Gambling Hall free for 3 hours with validation. Parking after that runs about $1.50 an hour.
Fremont is home to the famous Heart Attack Grill or you could choose Hugo’s Cellar at the Four Queens for romantic fine dining. The Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge at the Silverton Casino sports a kitschy interior complete with enormous aquarium and mermaids and Du-pars Restaurant & Bakery, which has been around since the old days is open 24/7 every day of the year.
When it comes to bars, Fremont Street has an eclectic mix. You might check out Insert Coins, an interactive Video Arcade Bar with great live music, the Backstage Bar & Liquors that is a giant pool hall and the Hogs & Heifers Bar, referred to as a “dive bar” in their own words. There are plenty of others to choose from and exploring is part of the fun.
The Container Park has a dizzying variety of stores and restaurants including Simply Pure, a raw food and gourmet vegan restaurant and there is a gigantic treehouse with many add-ons for the kids.
Slotzilla is a popular attraction that takes riders from the 12-story giant slot machine platform down the street on a zip line. You can speed along at 70 feet above the ground or take the zoom line 110 feet above the street. Slotzilla costs $20 to ride the zip line and $30 to ride the zoom line or you can get both for $40.
