Downtown Over The Strip
The Las Vegas Strip gets most of the buzz and attention, and it is easy to forget that Downtown has been around much longer and possesses an entire personality and panache of its own. From museums, to Fremont street, street performers and an indescribable energy, Downtown has an entirely different feel, cast of characters and crowd. Downtown Vegas does have a lot to offer the Vegas visitor if you only allow it. Here are a few key reasons why Downtown is great:
Cost. Saving money in Vegas is always a good thing. It lets you keep the cash for other purposes, such as entertainment, good food, and gambling! Rooms downtown can run significantly less than the main hubs on the Strip simply due to supply and demand. And it’s not like you miss out entirely on one if you stay in the other. They are not sequestered regions. Rather a $10-15 taxi can take you from downtown to the Bellagio fountains if you so desire. There are some great quality casino hotels downtown, ranging from the Golden Nugget, to the newly renovated and energized Plaza, and the just reopened “The D” (formerly Fitzgerald’s). Food prices downtown can be also easier on the wallet too. It is not uncommon to find steak dinner or buffet deals for about $8-10. Don’t worry, higher end prime offerings abound as well (Oscar’s at The Plaza, Chart House at The Golden Nugget).
Gambling downtown can be a bit friendlier. There is a subjective friendliness and casual attitude the Downtown dealers and table games will have, less rushed and frantic than the heated action on the Strip. Table limits will generally be less than on the Strip, where many casinos have a $15 table minimum and many of the big casinos will only have $25 tables on busy nights. For non-high rollers, this can be a bit harrowing. Downtown still possesses the dying breed of $5 tables if you find the right place, such as the California Club for example. And sometimes they even have better table odds on blackjacks and craps, just as another perk to attract people.
Downtown Vegas generally remains quieter and has less bustle than the Strip. It does so without sacrificing character. Fremont Street is a spectacle to behold and something everybody should experience in Las Vegas. Especially the 1st Friday concerts. So for a nice reprieve from the crowds, Downtown is a great haven. Don’t expect this to be the case forever, as there has been a cycle of sorts and the area has begun to make its way back to prominence.
