Got a hankerin’ for a touch of the wild west? Do you miss John Wayne? Did you like the movie City Slickers?

There is a reason for the popularity of the western genre of books, movies and other media. For many baby-boomers, some of their first memories involve either Roy Rogers, Matt Dillon (and Miss Kitty, of course) from Gunsmoke or Louis L’Amour novels. A lot of people still yearn for the days when cowboys ruled the range and there was a challenge to basic survival, if not a certain romance.

Las Vegas was initially founded by Mormons, ranchers, miners and railroad workers and is steeped in the history and traditions of the American frontier. Life on the range was never easy but it was especially hard in the arid climate of Southern Nevada. Still, some homesteaders and brave souls stuck it out.

Helldorado Days, coming May14 – 18, in Las Vegas is an annual event sponsored by the Elks# 1468 featuring a carnival, rodeo, concerts and a parade, all focusing on the timely traditions of the American West. 100% of the profit from ticket sales goes to charitable organizations in Southern Nevada. This year most of the action will take place at Symphony Park, 100 S. Grand Central Pkwy., next to the Smith Center.

The spirit of the Wild West is captured through such activities as Mutton Bustin,’ for younger cowpokes – from the ages of 5 to 7 and under 60 pounds. Riders can either hang on to their sheep around the neck or sink their hands into the wool and grip, trying to stay on for 6 seconds.

A ‘Whiskerino’ contest offers prizes for the longest moustache, best goatee, most unique beard and more. Judging criteria includes length, fullness, style, sophistication and ‘general manliness.’

Local cowboys and PRCA champions compete for world-class prizes at the rodeo.

Helldorado Days began in 1934 and is the longest running civic event in the history of Las Vegas. It has enabled the Elks to give back more than $4 million to the community over the years – and allowed for a whole lotta fun in the process. Dust off yer spurs and saddle and come join the party!
